Review Of A Speaking Event I Attended
On January 17th, I attended a Trends presentation at Brodstone Hospital in Superior, Ne. These presentations help fulfill the continuing education requirements for EMTs. Joe Graf of Kearney Good Samaritan Hospital, NREMTP/EMS Instructor, gave a presentation on Trauma Emergencies. The objectives of his presentation were 1: How to avoid tunnel vision on a trauma call, 2:Identify significant Mechanism of Injury and Trauma Code patients, and 3:Be able to think outside the box when approaching a trauma patient.There was not any noticeable interference with this presentation. The speaker is used to speaking in front of groups of people, and the method of delivery, the telemedicine network, had most of the bugs worked out on both ends in November during the first presentation. Mr. Graf did do some adaption, at the beginning-- to the situation of speaking to us while unsure if everyone was ready and paying attention to him. His presentation included handouts containing slides of his powerpoint presentation, available as a download from the Nebraska Critical Access Hospital website to Adobe pdf. file. The first case study involved a 22:00 hour EMS ambulance dispatch to a one vehicle 10:45, on I-80, rollover,one person injured. He reviewed the scene that the EMTs encountered, reviewed the presentation of the patient,the assessment, treatment and transportation of the patient. Then a discussion of the treatment plan, the outcome of the treatments, and any other questions were reviewed. The second case study involved a 27 year old obviously pregnant female involved in a two vehicle 10:45 (crash with injuries). Again the speaker reviewed the scene, the injury assessment and treatment plan, and the outcome. Discussion of alternatives followed. The presentation concluded with a question and answer session. Very few questions were asked, and the presentation lasted for two hours as planned. Mr. Graf did a good job of moving his presentation along, while answering questions, and keeping within his timeframe. The presentation was a good learning experience, and the case studies were interesting.
